Buzz About Bees is the new project working with our County and City councils and other groups to plant more bee-friendly amenity displays and meadows. Whilst these are not directly edibles they help with other edibles projects, ensuring that there are pollinators for fruit trees & bushes and our lovely community orchards. It is estimated that about a third of our food only grows because bees pollinate those crop plants - a very good reason to do all we can to help bees and other pollinators.
We have started with the Pointer Pollinator Pitstop! The first work took place in autumn 2013, with 5000 early crocus planted on the Pointer roundabout in South Lancaster, to provide very early spring nectar for the bees and other pollinators we need. This will be followed by a display of nectar rich annual flowers in two mini-meadows on the roundabout - the flower seeds will be sown this spring to give a lovely display later in 2014!
We are also be working with the Friends of Greaves Park to enhance the park for wildlife, with pollinator friendly meadows being planted. The first mini-meadow has been started and will be finished this spring.
We also have links with:
Lancaster Beekeepers who are working with Williamson Park to establish 3 meadow areas for bees to forage in. They are also working with United Utilities to plant a huge 40 acre meadow on the south of Lancaster.
Fork to Fork who are enhancing their wildflower meadow area to improve forage for bees.
Claver Hill who are planting a wildflower meadow area to provide bee forage.
